De Heus x Awareways
Stronger Together: Security, Privacy, and Integrity
In conversation with Michel Teuwen, Group Security Manager (CISO) and Tobias Wijnen, Project Manager at De Heus.

About the organization
De Heus makes a worldwide contribution to safe, healthy, and accessible animal feed. With more than 80 production sites in over twenty countries across five continents, communication is a key point of focus.
“If we start a new program in the Netherlands in the morning, the workday is already almost over at locations in Asia,” says Teuwen.

The need
"We wanted to develop an organization-wide program that structurally puts security, privacy, and integrity on the map,” says Michel. “Through a careful selection process, we chose Awareways."
“Our organization has more than ten thousand employees worldwide in a wide range of roles,” adds Tobias. “From drivers and production staff to office workers, they all use digital tools and have a De Heus account.”

The solution
The collaboration with Awareways began in 2023 with the Culture Scan. Based on this assessment, a learning plan was drawn up, after which training modules, a phishing simulation, an onboarding module, and a communication campaign were released.
Foundation created with Culture scan
"We wanted to move away from individual training sessions and toward one cohesive approach,” says Teuwen. “After an extensive RFI process, Awareways scored the highest on our selection criteria. Market references were also positive, which reinforced our decision.”
First results: noticeable progress
In 2025, the first measurement was conducted. It showed that awareness of information security has clearly increased. "Among office employees, we are seeing, for example, better compliance with policies, more reporting of incidents, and more careful handling of confidential information."
Progress is also being made among employees at production sites. "Initially, the focus was on office roles, but we are now also rolling out the training to colleagues in production, so they too become aware of their role in information security," says Wijnen.

Flexible approach for global launch
The global reach of De Heus requires flexibility. "We offer training sessions in the local language as much as possible, using separate platforms for each country. That makes it more accessible and effective,” says Wijnen.
“Even employees who don't constantly work with a laptop use devices and have access to online systems. They need to be just as alert to risks, such as unauthorized access in the workplace.”
Monitoring, HR integration, and local involvement
De Heus developed a dashboard with the Awareways API to monitor the progress of each business unit. Additionally, they are working on integration with the new HR system, which will allow training sessions to be structurally included in the onboarding and learning paths.
The involvement of local teams has proven to be significant. “For example, in one of our business units, a 'De Heus Protector' competition was recently organized, where employees could win a power bank. Initiatives like that encourage ownership and increase the program’s impact.”

Effective collaboration
"The content remains with us as the security team, but we continuously coordinate with the program managers at Awareways. That collaboration is professional. Of course, we sometimes run into technical challenges, but the follow-up is always fast.”
Focus on the future
The positive results form a basis for further development. "We will continue to repeat topics to maintain the level of knowledge, and we are developing new training sessions for specific target groups, such as production employees."
De Heus is also looking ahead. “Topics like artificial intelligence will play a bigger role. In that area, too, we expect the same innovative approach from Awareways that convinced us before,” Teuwen concludes.
