With the expansion of the Learning & Development team, we have not only welcomed several new colleagues in recent years, but have also taken a clear step toward further professionalizing and positioning L&D as a strategic pillar within the organization. After all, ‘L&D’ is not just the place where e-learning courses and training programs are created, but a department where behavioral science, educational vision, creativity, and subject matter expertise come together. With the arrival of Esther Schnepper, Ruben Heijmeijer, and Sander Vink, we are taking the next step toward realizing our ambition.
Knowledge & behaviour
What these three colleagues have in common is the conviction that learning only has a real impact when we look beyond the mere transfer of knowledge. It’s about inspiration, understanding human behavior, and designing learning experiences that align with the everyday reality of organizations and their employees. Within L&D, this vision comes together in programs that not only inform but also encourage different behaviors.
Sander sees his new role within L&D as a logical convergence of his studies, work experience, and personal motivations. As a social psychologist, he has spent his entire career exploring why people do what they do and how that behavior can be influenced. “Explaining difficult topics in an accessible way, through words and images, in a playful manner and with a touch of humor.” In previous roles, Sander worked on e-learning modules and broader learning pathways within organizations. He now brings that experience to bear in developing programs where knowledge transfer is explicitly focused on influencing behavior.
Development of a new pillar
Her involvement in the development of the Wave modules regarding AI literacy is a case in point. “With the announcement of the AI Act, it became clear that there was a new component we had to address. AI literacy is not an isolated theme, but an indispensable part of broader programs centered around security, privacy, and integrity.”
Its importance is evident: AI has since become a fourth pillar alongside security, privacy, and integrity. The modules on AI literacy in Wave were rolled out in the summer, and updates are being worked on continuously, as Esther explains: “Thanks to close client contact and new insights from the AI regulator, our modules remain in motion. It is an open standard, so continuous fine-tuning is part of the process.”
Continuous learning
This learning mindset characterizes the department as a whole. In this process, L&D is shifting from an operational to a strategic role: which topics deserve attention, which learning formats best resonate with target groups, and how do you ensure that learning actually contributes to secure and responsible behavior within organizations? Thanks to a mix of disciplines and close contact with developers and clients, L&D is the central link between vision and practice: a means to inspire people and truly get them moving.

Social issues
Where Sander starts from social psychology, Ruben brings an educational and philosophical perspective to daily practice. His interest in learning began with a critical look at the traditional school system. He studied Educational Sciences, delved into neuroscience, and found his way into political philosophy and social issues. This broad academic background now focuses on what lies behind the learning process. “What I find truly interesting is working with a close eye on the intent of a program and translating that into something effective and motivating.”
Ruben had been involved with Awareways for a long time before joining the L&D team full-time. As a project supporter, he contributed to content development and learning assessments, gradually growing into a strategic role. This strategic component is characteristic of the development L&D is undergoing at Awareways. The team is responsible for designing long-term learning programs that align as closely as possible with the specific context of each client.
With Esther, the L&D team gained a strong substantive boost at the intersection of law, technology, and education. As a lawyer, she brought extensive knowledge in the field of information and privacy law. At the same time, she was looking for an environment with room for creativity and educational innovation. She found that at Awareways, where her analytical perspective and creative energy quickly found their place.
